just hand wash it

Gee, people, is it so difficult to hand wash a beater?? I've always done it and had no problems. Plus, you're sure to get all food off of it, because you can feel for it with your hands.

I purchased my mixer at Christmas last year. It was used a couple of times resulting in both the beater and dough hook turning black. I am sorry but my expectation for an expensive small kitchen appliance is that it meet current infection control standards for cleaning and be dishwasher safe. Will be my last kitchen aid purchase.

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! BEATER & DOUGH HOOK BLACK
MrUnhappy
9/16/2019
I have this beater and dough hook (which have not ever been through the dishwasher) and they are turning black! I contacted customer service and they said too bad go buy new ones! Seriously, I will NEVER buy a kitchen aid product again, ever. If I had any idea this is what would happen to the beaters I wouldn't have bought the mixer. I can't afford to keep replacing items that should not need replaced. the black residue comes off into any food you try to mix. I have no idea what it is but I'm not baking that into cookies or bread and then feeding it to people. Is it lead? That could mean lead poisoning! Look at the picture of my beater - YUCH!

Stainless Steel or Burnished Aluminum??
baker123987
9/2/2019
I bought this beater several years ago thinking it was stainless steel as described, but when it turned black after washing, I assumed I misread the description and it was aluminum, not stainless steel. I threw it away. When I came back to the website to look for a "true" stainless steel beater I found it is still being advertised as "Stainless Steel" yet when KitchenAid responds to complaints about it turning black it is referred to a "Burnished Aluminum" beater, which explains why it turns black but it seems it is still being sold as stainless steel. Why is it still being sold as stainless steel?

No more chipping! Beautiful and durable!

I've had my KitchenAid mixer for 25 years and it is amazing. The flat beater, however, kept wearing out. Probably I replaced it three or four times. This time I asked myself "can I get one in stainless steel?" Well, the answer is YES! It's more expensive than the usual enameled beater. But, this won't ever need replacing. It is beautiful and durable. Before purchasing, I telephoned because one of the reviewers said their beater turned black. The rep said that that wasn't this product, but was a different product, and that this beater won't turn black, because it is stainless steel. I'm very happy with this purchase.

I'm so angry, I should have know better but was short on time and put my flat beater in the washer. Like everyone else it turned black and got all over everything. Definitely not stainless steel. Basically just threw $300 plus dollars in the trash. Not cool!

I love my stand mixer and have found a great use of shredding chicken UNTIL black residue was coming off of the flat beater! Even by only hand washing it is ruined and scared to use for safety of the food! Very disappointed!

Horrible Beaters turn everything black
baketress
5/22/2019
My sweet 32 year old bowl-lift mixer is still going strong, This is a 5/5. But the replacement beaters I bought because the original white powder coating was wearing off is a nightmare! I soaked them in vinegar, cleaned with baking soda, and was happy ... for about an hour. Into the dishwasher and back came the black powder. These beaters are mis-represented by calling them stainless steel. They are more like coal. So unhapy and am using my ragged initial beater because I am nervous about buying more. This sentiment is clearly mirrored by other commenters as it is a significant problem.

After going through several of the chipping/flaking coated beaters, I was frustratingly looking for something more durable. I almost didn't buy this because of the reviews, but I took a chance anyway because the claims didn't make sense. There are a lot of folks giving one star because the beater is "not dishwasher safe," however, if you look at the pictures of their "defective" product, they have the burnished beater, not the stainless steel. I have no idea why Kitchenaid ever made a non-dishwasher safe burnished beater (it now shows out of stock), but this stainless steel beater is definitely fine in the dishwasher (like anything else that is a single piece of stainless steel). It is more expensive, but definitely worth it.

I bought the Professional HD model stand mixer for my wife and it works great. All the attachments work good except the flat beater. We cannot use it anymore as it now releases a black powder from it. I cannot believe that with all the negative reviews that a company as large and reputable as Kitchen Aid hasn't responded and recalled these inferior tools. We may have to sell this one and go with Cuisinart.

Black residue- worried!
Momma MB
5/7/2019
I as well used my flat beater once and washed it in the dishwasher which destroyed the topcoat of whatever was on there! Now there is black residue on everything! I'm worried that the topcoat was toxic and coming off in my food! And it's not truly stainless steel! I'm very upset. I trusted kitchenaid for over two decades and I'm seeing a big upset in quality as a consumer. How was this overlooked in focus groups??? I'm worried what has gotten into my food!

I received a 6qt mixer as a gift. The appliance works fine. Like happened to other reviewers, week I placed the flat beater in the dishwasher and is now completely useless (with a black coating). This doesnt happen with stainless steel. This never happened with my smaller Kitchenaid mixer where the beater was plastic.

So the beaters that came with my mixer are not stainless steel, and washing them in the dishwasher creates a black film. The product manual clearly states this, but I ignored it. However, the film is pretty easy to remove with a little scrubbing. There is no need to throw the beaters away. Just wash them by hand and dry carefully. I love my mixer. I did not have a stand mixer until I was in my 60s, and now I don't know how I lived without it!

This is stainless steel. A magnet will not stick to it. I used to have the white, enamel ? coated beater and over time the enamel finish would chip off. Not with this bad boy. For those folks who did the reviews on a beater bar that turned colors in the dishwasher, well, it wasn't this one. It must have been another flat beater. I've run it through the dishwasher with no problems. I should have purchased this a long time ago!

I was so excited when my husband came home with our new Kitchen Aide! Sadly, the beater is now ruined from washing in the dishwasher. The paint/coating is flaking off and I can't use my mixer until this attachment is replaced. This one replaced my 22-year smaller capacity mixer and I'm so sorry I got rid of the older smaller one seeing how low-quality the attachments are on this model.

Received a 5 quart stand mixer for Christmas. The flat beater was put in the dishwasher this morning-I normally hand wash but my kids threw it in the dishwasher to help me out-now it's ruined. The finish is completely gone and a black powdery substance remains. The kids feel guilty but it's not their fault as the attachment was supposed to be dishwasher safe. I'm not happy and neither is my husband who spent hundreds of dollars on this mixer. Do not recommend purchase.

I've owned my unit for years and have always hand washed the beater. I put it in the dishwasher for the first time thinking it would be fine since it's stainless steel, but the beater came out tarnished with black powdery substance. When I ried to scrub it with s dish sponge, the soot turned my sponge gray. Had to throw it in the trash.

They are probably aluminum and are not dishwasher safe. Found that out this morning when I went to make cookies after putting my beater in the dishwasher. It oxidized and turned gray with a black residue. I've had my KitchenAid for years since my children were babies. They are in in their thirties. Very upset this replacement didn't hold up to KA reputation. I got my children KA for wedding gifts....need to warn them of this problem. Shame on you KA!

Much like the others have stated here, mine also oxidized after being put in the dishwasher for the first time. Have hand washed it for a few years but the one time in the dishwasher(as stated is safe) it has been rendered useless. It now has a slivery/greyish film that come off and I do not want to mix anything and put this finish in my food.
Needs to be redesigned or ensure the finish does not WASH off

Just like everyone else- ran through the dishwasher once and it's ruined. The metal oxidizes and it's just nasty. This is super poor representation. Now when I recommend my mixer I make sure they get the coated attachment (for more money). Just saddened by this because I don't use my mixer nearly as often as I imagined because of this.

We purchased a stand unit last year and have only used it a few times over the course of the year, The flat beater attachment has become covered with a black residue that renders this attachment useless for food preparation. The material used in the casting of this beater is certainly not stainless steel! I see by the reviews that this is not a one -off experience> I cannot recommend this product for food preparation for anyone. The machine itself is well built but the attachments are of a quality that I would not expect are up to the KitchenAid standards either. Hopefully, Kitchen Aid will provide a remedy for this.
Thank you....
